Food Allergy C‚Äčounselling

Paula-Jane Bellizzi, MSW, RSW

Paula-Jane has practiced social work in a variety of settings and has extensive experience dealing with individuals/families coping with medical conditions and disabilities. As a parent of a teenager with a milk and egg allergy (previously peanut/nut), Paula-Jane has first-hand knowledge of what it is like to manage food allergies on a day-to-day basis. Recognizing the stress of dealing with food allergies, Paula-Jane co-founded the Mississauga Anaphylaxis Group (MAG) in 2002 to provide information/support to parents of anaphylactic children. She was the leader of the MAG from 2002-2006 and, through her practice, continues to provide counselling and support to many families dealing with food allergies. Paula-Jane has volunteered in her children's schools and provided training to parent councils and school staff on: recognizing the signs/symptoms of anaphylaxis; how to administer the Epi-pen auto-injector; and strategies for creating a safe, allergen-aware learning environment for students. Combining her social work skills and knowledge of anaphylaxis with a collaborative approach has resulted in the development of an effective anaphylaxis management strategy within her daughter's schools.

A Registered Social Worker, Paula-Jane holds Bachelor of Arts (Honours Psychology), Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work degrees. She is a member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and belongs to the Ontario Association of Social Workers.

Paula-Jane and her husband live in Mississauga, ON and have two children (one with food allergies and both with asthma).
